About the Maps
Our maps are raster maps (made up of pixels/dots, like a digital photo). Although all
the maps make fine wall coverings, particularly the Free Decorative Maps, the relief and land cover maps
are mainly intended as backgrounds for your geographic projects.
If you are not a GIS person, don’t be put off by the word “georeferenced”. You can open
and work on any map on this site using any picture software. If you save a georeferenced map using
non-GIS software, you only risk losing the embedded geodata, which is no problem if you don't need it.
In addition, our Miller-projection world maps and our orthographic maps are specifically
aimed at customers who need a ready-made sensibly-projected map to start painting on.
To cover all our bases, all the non-georeferenced maps come with sufficient
latitude-longitude data to assist GIS folk to georeference them.
All the maps are supplied with normal colour saturation, brightness, and contrast levels.
To increase the prominence of any data you want to superimpose , simply "fade" any map by adjusting these
values with your software.
Note about rivers: natural physical features such as major lakes and river valleys appear
on both the relief and land cover maps. Major rivers are also discernable on the land cover maps, but rivers
(the water surfaces) are not marked on the relief maps.
Free maps: we recommend you save the free maps directly to your computer, rather than by saving
an image opened in your browser. This will ensure maintenance of image quality, and any embedded geodata.
